Inner Workings of American Nazi Party ToldReporter Interviews Chicago Storm TrooperThe following interview was secured by our Chicago associate editor Nathan Kaplan last year when an altercation broke out in Chicago before a bond rally. It was held on galleys for a_ propiti-ous moment. Now that Rockwell is involved again in the news in Chicago, the interview becomes timely, and throws light on the kind of fuzzy thinking that motivates the American Nans. Mr. Kaplan is now a public relations official of the Chicago College of Jewish Studies.)By NATHAN KAPLANKaplan — My name is Nathan Kaplan. I’m with the NationalJewish Post and Opinion. I saw this item in the paper about you boys getting hit outside the Civic Opera House. I wanted to check if the news report got it straight.On May 24, a Bonds for Israel show was held at the Chicago Civic Opera House. Columnist Irv Kupcinet was honored as Man of the Year. .Storm-troopers from the Chicago unit of the American Nazi Party picketed the rally. Two men, outraged by their presence, broke through the police line to assault the Nazis and were arrested. The “attack” consisted of nothing more than a harmless blow, although one of the Nazis may have sustained a heavier punch. One of the attackers was a 71-year old man, Jacob Warsaw, who has been long active in the American Jewish Congress here.Christopher Vidnejevich: The police were pretty good. They tried to keep order. They managed to assault Boissonault, though.NK: Was he hurt?CV: No, he wasn’t hurt.NK. How hard a blow was it? Was it a scuffle or an attempt to hit him?CV: Well, he actually got hit, hut thp uourwl wasn’t anvthinpbasic program — do you say what you are for and what you are againlt;d?CV: Oh yes, we do.NK: What is your main purpose? What are you trying to accomplish.CV: Well, above all, we are white racists. We believe in the white race. We believe that to solve the racial problem and for Negroes to get first class citizenship. Of course, this isn’t the impression we give out in the streets, all because we are trying to make the newspapers.NK: You say you want the Negroes to have first class citizenship?CV: Yes, but we believe that the average white man will not accept them. I’ll give you an example. I suppose that the most organized liberal group, as far as the main things are concerned, is probably the Jewish people. I am sure you are aware of this. But if you talk to Jewish cab drivers, when it comes to Negroes, they just won’t accept them. Whether it is economical, or whatever it is, it is there. What we say is this: the majority of the white men will not accept the Negro, and if they do want first class citizenship that the only logical answer, the only answer that would definitely settle the problem would be repatriation, in other words — two countries, one for Negro and one for White. Our program calls for repatriation with all financial help, etc.NK: In the newspapers, you guys are sometimes referred to as a “hate group.” Do you feel that you fellows are a “hate group?”CV: Well, I’ll give you mynwn nersnnal oninion 1 mmnnMtive, but the former head of our Los Angeles division was a Jewish boy named Leonard Holstein.NK: Now be was the leader of the Los Angeles unit?CV: Yes.NK: And he was Jewish?CV: Yeb, that’s right.NK: And he identified himself as an American Nazi?CV: Oh, yes, he was the head of the unit out there. As a matter of fact, be began a big riot at one of these Zionist rallies. What 1 understand is that him and the other bunch — I think there was four of them altogether — actually started the attack on the Jews, the Zionists there.NK: He made a physical attack?CV: That’s the only time we have ever done this sort of thing.NK: You’ve never engaged in violence. I can t remember reading it.CV: No, I don’t believe in it. Publicly, we have of course claimed innocence (the Los Angeles attack), but we had some people at the trial — the four of them were tried — testimony came out that they definitely did attack.NK: About how long ago wasthis?the street, and they have to go through a 90-day basic training — they have to go through a number of pickets, depending on what part of the country they are in.NK: Where do you draw your members from? How did they contact you?CV: Normally, almost all of our members have at one time written to Arlington (national headquarters). You know of course that we are constantly getting publicity.CV: Nor they write to Arling-CV: No they write to Arlington. Then they become members and if they want to become more active they either want to go down there or. . .NK: Now let me understand. Do members come to you because they hear about your American Nazi Party so they write to Rockwell, is that it? And he tells them where the local unit is. Is„ that it? And that’s how you get your members. How did you join the American Nazi Party?CV: Through some people I had heard about the party, so I went down there. I was curi-CV: About two years ago.NK: Chris, do you think you fellows are being misunderstood? Are you getting a badpress?CV: Well, I would say this, that up until recently 1 would say that we have been getting a horrible press. There is no getting around it It was pretty rotten. But as of recently whenous.NK: And you said you had some Jewish sympathizers in Chicago?CV: Yes.NK: And in what form do they sympathize with you?CV: Basically, the whole program. You’d be surprised how many Jews are racists. They just won’t have anything to do with the niggers.NK: Do they support you in anyway, or are they in sympathy with your (purpose)?CV: Well, like I say, in otherdo you think were killed?CV: Well, my own estimate is this: Well, it was definitely not as much as one million. The very, very most, the maximum amount of Jews that could have possibly died — now this is the uttermost maximum — 1 believe it was 200,000 or so. This includes when the German army went into Russia (I am not German by the way)NK: Is Vidnejevich a Yugoslavian name?CV: Yes.CV: When they went into Russia, almost every single, in all them towns and villages, local cornminssars and police chiefs in most cases, not all cases, the great vast majority of the cases were Jewish. Whether they were Jewish or gentile — these people were all shot by the German army, and the 200,000 are included in that.NK: This thing about the concentration camps, is that fact or fiction.CV: There definitely were concentration camps. I have known inmates of camps. I’ve known guards around camps, and I know persons who lived inside the camp, and all three of them tell me the same story. There was definitely no such thing as a gas chamber or crematoriums.One source is a Jew who lives in Bangor, Me. He was in Dachau in the camp and he says he never saw no such thing at a gas chamber or crematorium. He himself says it is bull. Why should he go out and deny everything, he says, his business will be ruined.NK: Do you fellows have any
