MONG the varied exten sive business operations carried on in Frederick county there is none which meets with more general rec ognition than that of the dis tillery industry and in this connection we desire to call special attention to the cele brated old Adalt Distillery located in the Burkittsville district. Probably no whissy in the whole United States bears a better reputation than the famous Afoasetain Spring and Aadetau whiskies pro duced here. They are valued everywhere for their purity and Haver and are always a great demand by those who know what is good and best. ‘This distillery which is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains manufactures from the very best qualities of rye and barley malt, and the purest water in Ute State,in the process of distillation every precaution is taken that science and experiences can suggest to main tain the excellence for which Use production is, noted for Frederick county people Use growth and development of the salt Mistiéers has al ways been a source of satisfactory interest, and its successful competition and recognition in com mercial circles have ever been feamned with com mendation and approval for the enterprise and business ability of its owner—Mr. John J. Ahab.The plant consists of a group of eight or nine buildings, among which are three ware houses, containing twelve tiers ana each with a capacity of 2,900 barrels or 228,00 gallons in all. ‘To these buildings in the spring will be added another warehouse, which will be built to contain 3,800 barrels. “The equipment through out contains the most approved mechanical ap pliances, being in every respect a complete cop per distillation, and has a daily capacity of 00 gallons, which wil shortly be raised to 1,000. The warehouses are all steam heated and are built on high dry ground, it being well known that the higher the altitude the more rapid whisky improves. About 18q8 on the site of this distillery, which is about U6 miles from Gapland, the nearest railway station on the 2, ORR, the Hon. Joh Lee, who once repre sented this district in Congress, erected a flour mill, and in 1879 it again changed its form, and was made suitable to its present purpose by Mr. Ahalt, who recognized the fact that the grain which crows on the fertile plains and valleys of Frederick county is of a quality so fine that no matter whatever it is converted into, it always produces the bust of its kind. Mr. Ahal is a native of the Middletown Valley and was born in the Burkittsville district, February 24, 1848, from his daylord days he has always demon strated his great business ability and “get there”’ methods. [in 186g he married Miss Harnet Jennelle Willard, daughter of Abraham Willard, a well-to do farmer of Middletown Valley. In 1887 he built warehouse No. 2, and in 1903 he established a retail house in Knoxville, which is doing an excellent local business. Quite re cently My. Abalt received an order for 25,000 barrels of whisky to be delivered at no specified time and thisn itself goes to show the great de mand for his excellent mountain water.” The trade offie house extends throughout the coun try, the distributing agents being NR Collins Co. of Bradford, Pa. The residence of Mr Adab is charmingly located near his works, on the summit of one of the loveliest hill parks the God of nature ever made. The mountains and val leys of West Virgina and Maryland surroundin whole region in a ring of delicious green. Di rectly opposite his front porch stands majestically South Mountain, near which the great battle of Antietam was fought. No man in the State enjoys a finer reputation for liberality, public spirit and hospitality than Mr. hall, the royal goo fellow and founder of one of the most notable industries of Frederick county. GLADE VALLEY MILLING COMPANY, just erected a fine new plant on the Pennsylvania Beck. at Walkersville, covering some 15,000 square feet of floor space. It is equipped with the very latest and most improved machinery, and beyond a doubt is the most model mill of its kind in Western Maryland. It has a capacity of 123 ° barrels a day. ‘The Woousboro mill is also thoroughly equipped and has a capacity of 75 bar rels per diem. ‘The trade of the house extends throughout Veederick county and in Bal timore, Philadelphia and New Among the leading specialities is the manufacture of the celebrated ‘Purity Brand' of flour, which is noted for its excellent quality, and the trinsic value. ‘The officers of the company are A. LL Utaler, president and manager; L. J. Wachter, vice-president; JY. Nicodemus, secretary and treasurer. President Kitzler is a native of Johnsville, this county. Prior to coming to Woodsboro he conducted a mill near Middleburg. Tie is vice-president of the Woodsboro Savings Bank, and is a man of progress in every sense of the word,lo holds JOHN GOMBER. Al of the substan tial and ex panding, enterprises of Mrederek is the bus iness transacted by Mr. John Cember, lo cated in his own iron building on South Mar ket street, just north of the Carroll Creek bridge. Mr. Gomber, who is a native of Frederick, is known throughout Mid- Me Maryland as an ex pert machinist and dealer in engine and ma chinery supplies, gum and and leather belting, etc. Flo makes a load ing specialty of iron pumps and of repairing the same. New and second hand engines are also bought and sold. Mr. Gomber, who is a self made man in every sense of the word, begat business for himself in 1890 and was formerly located in the old car- N enterprise which for many years has ranked high among the diversified com mercial interests of Frederick county is that of the Gade Val ley Milling Company of Woods boro, manufacturers of full roller process flour, corn meal and chops, and extensive heaters in grain, feed and bituminous and anthracite coal The busi ness was established in factsg by A. U. Mr Wachter is a native of Utica Mills, and for many years followed the trade of a successful carpenter. Mr. Nicodumus was born in Walkersville, on is a graduate of Dickinson College, Carisle, Pa, class of ‘og. ‘These gentlemen with A W. Kehler and C. A. Nicodemus compose the board of directors, riage repository now occupied by Milton S McDonnell, reconstructed and moved into the fine “Gomber Building” he now occupies in 1898. Lis trade extends throughout Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Southern Pennsylvania. The stationary and compound engines, machinery, pumps, etc, handled by him show marked features of superiority and are absolutely unri valled for durability, efficiency and perfect work manship. In the way of general repair work Mr. Gomber is thoroughly skilled in its every detail, and you can not do better than patronize him in this direction. On the property owned by the widow Rout zatinv on the line of the electric railway, between Middletown and Myersville, lies the body of Peter Suman, one of the unfortunate Tories who were executed. Among the last of the well-known wagoners on the old National Pike were Jake Brewer, Dan Sager and Newcomber’s Harry (a slave), who drove six-horse teams between Baltimore, Wash ington and Wheeiing.
