The health auihoritiaa of San- Francisco employ an Inspector in Chinatown whose special duty it is to look after the cleanliness of that quarter and notify residents and property owners to abate any nuisance* that may ariee on their premiaes. A walk through the alleys and labyrinths of that delectable quarter reveal broken sewers, decayed vegetable matter and filth and slime from closets and vanlts flowing in disgusting rivulets through some of the thoroughfares. On Cum Cook alley the sewer is broken, the planking partially destroyed, exposing to view the accumulated filth below. The sights and smells in this alley are enough to turn any stomach but that of a Chinaman. In nearly all the hallways leading from Ross and Bartlett alleys decaying vegetable matter is left lying in huge heaps generating disease and perhaps pestilence. In a cellar on Bartlett alley a Chinaman has confined % dozen mangy dofp of all color* and Bizes, besides a. number of dncka. The stench from this vile underground kennel can be plainly distinguished from the street above. The health authorities owe it to themselves and the city to take some measures immediately for the abatement of these nuisances and the infusing of some energy into the Inspector whoo has charge of the sanitary condition of that quarter. Ia the situation any better in Reno? Besides the Chinese 3vil distributed throughout town in the shape of wash-houses, what a fine source of filth, pestilence and disease is not Chinatown itself? Were small pox or cholera to call on Reno, it* first quarter would be in Chinatown. Besides it should be remembered that when Chinatown was banished to its present quarters, it has since built itself on both sides of a large ditch which carries drinking water to many citizens in the lower part of the valley. What a fine assortment of stuff and fifth is thrown into the ditch every day? The Chinese colony lines the ditch on both sides for at least three or five hundred feet, and every variety of filth and refuse are cast into it. Is it not about time that the people ctf ft civilized generation, arise and protect themselves from the habits and vicos of a non-progressive people like the Chinese, who take no sanitary precaution against disease and death? While oue of their species succumbs to death, he will entail the destroying of half a dozen others whe observe the luwa of deanlines* and health, ahould an epidemic occur.
