J. Bryan Dorn, ‘The Democrats who have niled the political roost in South Carolina for more than 100 years, appear like in trouble with the legsl disqualification of their gubernatorial nominee—Charles “Pug Ravenel. ‘The 36-year-old Charlesion in vestment banker, a political uni known a few months ago, slas hed the experts and (he so-call ed political establishment in July by winning the Democrat ic nomination for governor. ‘Then came 2ailing from the state Supreme Court that Hav enel couldn't serve because he failed to meet the five-year residency requirement as set forth in the state constitution. Ravenel is trying every pos sible legal avenue to off-set the court ruling, but he has thus far run into nothing but dead-end streets. Faced with an Oct. 1 deadline for certification of a gubernato rial candidate, the Democratic executive committee decided to reconvene the 1,200 members of the state convention Monday morning in Columbia. It will be the job of the dele gates to suggest a replacement for Ravenel .There are some technicalities in the state flaw that prohibits the convention from actually selecting a candidate. The dele gates can makes recommenda tion and the executive commit tee, has taken a moral pledge to. Uphold the decision. Reports from several dele gates indicate an undercurrent of support for former Gov. Rob ert McNair. These delegates said McNair was the only one who could stop Republican Edwards, ‘There is fear that the Ravenel supporters, angry over the court decision and the loss of their candidate, will vote again st anyone who ran in the Democratic primary. McNair is popular in South Carolina, although he would have some trouble getting the important black vote. Lt. Gov. Earle E. Morris, who finished third in the first primary, recently said he “wouldn’t touch the nominalian with a [0-foot pole.” Some of his loyal backers, however, are expected to enter his name into the Monday cone ention. McNair, however, didn't close the door on his possible candidacy-he said. “I have no political plans at this time, but that doesn’t mean that someday I won't seek another elective office. Under the rather complicated law only the executive commit tee can at this time name a sub stitute candidate, Dorn, who Finished seconi to Ravenel in the first primary July 15, and this was beaten ‘badly by the young Charleston Tinancier in the runoff two weeks later, already has said he would accept the nomination in an effort to unify the party.” ‘Where apparently is enough support among the delegates to give Dorn a second chance. Also running for governor are state Sen. James B. Edwards, the Republican adminee, and Mrs. Peggy Jenning, candi date of the Independent Party. Meanwhile, another group of delegates are attempting to promote state Rep. Brantley Harvey, the lieutenant guber naterial ramine. to the top spot. ‘One of the delegates told The Associated Press, “our hopes are Ih get Rep. Harvey as our gubernatorial nominee and state Rep. Alex Sanders, of Richland County on the ticket as lieutenant governor.”
