Clark concertOld names play new soundsThis very evening, Clark Gym will find itself inhabited for a few hours by various and sundry night tnppers and Turtle Mothers, as Doctor John also known as Mac Rebennack and the Phlorescent Leech and Eddie, who once upon a time were Mark Volman and Howard Kay Ian, sweep down into Buffaloland for two shows at 8 and 11 p.mThough Doctor John has been recording on his own since 1967, in the guise of the night tripper, his career dates back to the mid-fifties where he was instrumental in contributing to the famed New Orleans sound. His piano and guitar playing, influenced by such masters as Huey Smith and Professor Longhair, has been heard on songs by such classic artists as Jesse Hill and Ernie It, Doe.Musical medicineOn his latest album, Gumbo, the good doctor dipped back into his past and showed off his impeccable taste bv doing a whole album s worth of New Orleans material. He’s a truly remarkablemusician and performer. The Leech and Eddie began their careers as Turtles back in 1965, doing the things rock stars are supposed to do, and after a while, Frank Zappa wooed them into his Mothers of Invention family. It was there that they became the infamous Flo and Eddie, delighting groupies from coast to coast. In England they became buddies with the Slider, Marc Bolan, and they have done the back-up vocals for the last couple of T. Rex albums. A few months ago they went into the studio, and with the help of ex-Mothers Don Preston (he of keyboard fame) and Ainsley Dunbar (he of percussive notoriety), they recorded an album of their own songs. Dunbar and Preston are now in their band, and Flo and Eddie are*certainly becoming a team to be reckoned with. All this for only $2.50, $2,75 or $3,00, depending on ycur status as student, faculty or other. And it’s tonight! No waiting! By the end of* the night* Nikki Hoi will guide us all to Nikki heaven. See you there.
