Lt. Col. Charles R. Arvin, com mander of the four Nike bases in the Cincinnati Defense Area, told the Army’s Nike story to Wilming ton Rotarians Monday noon in the General Denver Hotel. He said there will be a total of 575 men at the four sites which in clude, Wilmington, Felicity, Oxford and Dillsboro, Ind. The local site will have about 260-270 men , be cause in addition to operating as one of the batteries, Wilmington is headquarters for the area. He discussed briefly the Army’s missile family including the Ajax, Hercules, the Zeus and the Hawk. Preceding his talk was a five minute film which showed missile launchings at White Sands, N. M., and destruction of target planes. He explained that the Nike Her cules, the type that will be here, is no more dangerous to the commun ity than a‘‘filling station.” He compared the underground fuel storage of the corner filling station to the underground storage of the Hercules. Danger of accident is slight he said, citing only three ac cidents in more than 3,000 firings at bases in this country. Col. Arvin told the group that Nike personnel will be established here in force in November, that “we intend to become good neigh bors and do our share to support the community.” The speaker was introduced by Thomas Hunter.
