Collections Receive Recognition at SPA Exhibit in Louisville Two LaGrange “philometrists” received top recognition “recently at_an exhibition of the Society of Philatelic Americas in Louisville, Ky. And just in case you don't know what a philometrist is, one of the winners, H.R. Landes, 27 N. Brain ard, explained it this week. A philometrist is closely akin to a philatelist. The difference is that while a philatelist collects stamps, a philometrist collects cancella tions made by meter stamp ma chines. One of the foremost authorities in the field is William Pamperien, 6 S. Madison, who along with Landes, entered frames of their collections in the Louisville ex hibit. Pamperien’s frame of six pieces was awarded a blue rib bon at the August meeting, an unusual achievement for just one frame of stamps. Landes collected a red ribbon for his single frame entry to continue his unbroken record of exhibition recognition begun six years ago. However, Landes admits that Pam Rerien is the expert in the field. The LaGrange man, who has been collecting for many years, currently has a collection of from 2,080 to 3,000 pieces. He is one of the orig inal members of the Philometer Society of Chicago, a branch of the SPA. Landes first became interested in philometer while sorting mail in his office some six years ago. He noticed a difference in the meter stampings on several en velopes and began to inquire about them. His investigation prompted more interest, and soon he found he was collecting. He became associated with Pamper son when he went to him to seek information about a few pieces in his collection. Philometer is the youngest branch of philatelism. It saw its beginning when the first meter stamp machine was patented. Now there are over 300,000 meter mac hines in existence, a fart which provides a fertile field for phil anetrists. The achievement of the two La Grange men as most recently re corded in oan issue of Stan, the oficial publication of the Society of Philatelic Americans.
