ESCANABA GLIDER PILOT—These_ two Michigan men, one of them an Escanaba man, are among the latest class of ‘Winged Commandos” trained in Uncle Sam’s giant cargo and_ troop carrying gliders at South Plains Army Air Field at Lubbock, Texas. They now join the ranks of other glider pilots who helped make headlines in Sicily. This shot, taken in the final phases of training, shows, left to right, Albert E. Jergens, of 13071 Rosemary avenue, Detroit, and Walden Kenneth Hawkinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hawkinson of Escanaba, BARK RIVER PILOT—Silhouetted against a basic training plane, Vultee ‘“Valiant,”’ Aviation Cadets Harold R. Peterson, Bark River, left, and Howard A. Pierucki, 201 Jerosene St., Sturgis, are pictured in full flying regalia, going over last minute instructions prior to taking off on routine solo flights from Garden City Army Air Field, Kansas. Now well along in an intensive nine week academic and aerial course, these Michigan cadets will soon go on to advanced schools, where upon graduating, they will be flying officers of the U.S. Army Air Forces, wearing silver wings.
