Pioneers Open Season Against Eureka TomorrowMoney men Defeated Visitors In Last Year’s DuelShurtleflf College will officially open its 1939 football season Saturday evening at 8:00 o’clock on the Alton High School field against the Eureka eleven. This year’s Red Devil team will probably be stronger than the aggregation which bowed to the Pioneer onslaught last year, 13-7. Last year the visitors’ team was composed mostly of young, inexperienced players. This year, with a full season of college competition to their credit, they should prove to be a much more formidable squad. The Pioneer outlook is none too bright even with nine lettermen returning. Such names as Bob Gearing, Les Patrick, Ben Moore, Glen Pur-vines, and Tom Jones will be missed when the Pioneers trot out on the fieldtomorrow evening.Local fans are hoping that the combination of the nine lettermen—Feige, Re, Hamilton, Holtzscher, Bryant, West, Keck, Wingert, and Brown— plus such newcomers as Reynolds, former Alton High player and Hall, who hails from St. Joseph, Mo., will give the school an even better record than was established last year—four victories out of six games. The official lineup is yet a mystery, but it looks as if Shurtleff will be able to put eleven credable men on the field. The big weakness will be felt in the lack of reserves. The probable starting lineup will be:Left End ....................Art FeigeLeft Tackle _______________ Leonard ReLeft Guard ..... Joe HamiltonCenter Elwood HoltzscherRight Guard _________ Edgar BryantRight Tackle ___________ Jeff WestRight End ..................... Mick LauQuarterback _______________Carl KeckHalfback .....___________Herman WingertHalfback_______________________________ Tom HallFullback ........ Oscar Reynolds
