Thirteen Cinnabar Prospectors Are Drowned in Presidio County, ARE CAUGHT ASLEEP A Cloudburst Caused a Roaring Tor rent to Rush Down on the Mens. Only Six of the Bodies Have Been Recovered, Laredo, Tex., Sept. 28.—Thirteen prospectors for cinnnabar were drowned on Alamito creek in Presidio county on Wednesday to a cloudburst and the sudden rise in the stream. On account of the spare settlement only meager de tails have as yet reached here. The men were camped at two places in the creek bottoms, which had been nothing but a dry ravine for 15 months on account of the dreath and were asleep when the rushing water came. At the camps there was a good rain in the afternoon, but it caused no appre hension. Fifteen miles north, however, there was a waterspout or cloudburst such as had never before been known in the country. The water rushed and roared down the creek bed and caught the prospectors and the water was on two camps before the sleepers had warning of its coming and every man,3 in number, was drowned. Only six bodies of the drowned men had been recovered at last account, and it is feared the other seven will never be found. The names of the drowned are: William Bolis. George Hollan, of Missouri. Henry Carter, Hernandez Costello. Phillip Humphreys. Peter Schaffer, formerly of St. Louis. Alfred Montez. William Jefferson of Kentucky. Thomas Frezzell. Alfernon Rhea. Caspar Deutschman. George Finch of Alabama. Robert Carr of Arkansas. The rush of the water down the streem is described by prospectors who were camped on the high ground out of the torrent as the most terrific sight they ever witnessed. Great cottonwood trees were torn up by their roots and sent whirling down the wild waters, and the carcasses of cattle and sheep could be counted by hundreds in the moonlight as they floated toward the Rio Grande.
