Terrible Tragedy at Stanford—Tub Sheriff Killed and tub town Marshal Seriously\Y OUND1D.—Last Saturday night onr neighboring town oI Standford was the 6eene of a terrible tragedy. It appears that Sam Holmes a young man 20 years of age, who resides in Lincoln county, near Crab Orchard, came to Stanford, got intoxicated and created a disturbance by firing ofl his pisto]. The attempt to arrest him was made by Col. T. W. Napier, the Sheriff of the county, and E. M. Davidson, the TowrMarshal, when Holmes drew his revolver and shot Col Napier twice, inflicting wounds which resulted in his death in two hours. He alsoshot Mr. Davidson, inflicting a serious wound that will probably provefatal, owing to the precarious condition ol his health.Before tho people of the town had recovered from the shock of the terrible tragedy. Holmes mountedliia horse and made good his escape: The county Judge of Lincoln has offered SI,000 for hi* apprehension. 1'his amount was increased $500 liy the (Governor.Col. Napier was a man of spotless integrity, and faithful, energetic officer of the law. He was Lieu-tenaui Colonel of the regimeut ofConfederate cavelry under Colonel Grigsby, iu the late war. He received a very severe wound while in active service, that came near proving fatal. Previons to the war he was the Judge of the Lincoln County Court, and was elected Sheriff in August. 1363. Hii loss will he severely felt in Lincoln! county.There was a rumor in our town on yesterday that Holmes had been arrested in Louisville.— DanvilleAdvocate.
