IDAHOMan wins right to jump Snake River Canyon for $1 millionBY BRIAN SMITHTHE TIMES-NEWSboise • After an hour of bidding, the rights to jump the Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho, went for almost $1 million today.“Big” Ed Beckley of Texas made the winning bid of $943,000.“I’m the guy who’s gonna get it done,” Beckley said.Beckley partnered with the Bridgeport, Texas-based Beckley Media LLC to vie for the chance to re-create Evel Knievel’s Snake River Canyon jump on the 40th anniversary of Knievel’s attempt.He was in a bidding war with Scott Smith at the state auction inside the Idaho Department of Lands building in downtown Boise. The auction drew about 50 people and multiple media outlets.Beckley advertises himself as the “World’s Largest Motorcycle Jumper” and the only motorcycle stuntman like Knievel to bid in the auction.His bid won him a two-year lease on the state land near Twin Falls where the jump took place in September 1974.Beckley also must pay $25,000 a year to the Idaho Department of Lands for each of the two years, have $10 million in commercial liability insurance and turn over a share of the revenue from the event to the state.
