These men were prosecuted by the -State Department and each fined $2G and costs by the local Court for violation of the Texas -Sweet Potato Law, which prohibits the movement of sweat potatoes from any weevcl infested area into the “Pest Free Slones or into 'Counties where weevil eradication work is being carried on.The sweet potato weevil is an expensive pest. In 191?. it is estimated that it mused the growers of Texas a Iobs of 51,800,000 but today, duo to extensive eradication work, approximately one half of the Counties of the Stato arc included in those Pest Free Zones and the Sweet ‘Potato Industry ranks second in importance among the agricultural industries of the State,The Fort Worth incident is only one of mnby such incidents that have happened throughout the Free Zones hut it shows what the ^ «tatc Department, oil Agriculture is doing to protect the*. sweet potato growers however the area to be covered is very large and the Department needs the' cooperation of every citizen in the Free Zones in keeping sweet potatoes from infested areas from coming in,• Panola County is in tho Pest llt;roa Zone and its growers are protected by these Regulations.
