THE CITY COUNCIL.ELECTION OF CUAS. J*. WOODWARD AS HOSPITAL SLPKKiNTKN DENT—-COMMITTEE REPORTS, Pay rolls, PBTl-TIOWS. Ac.m The City Council met in regular session last evening, President Lichtenstein in the chair.Gn motion of Mr. Johnson, the rules were suspended, and Council proceeded to the election of a superintendent of City Hospital.Mr. Johnson nominated Charles B. Woodward, and the ballot resulted as follows: For Charles B. Woodward 13votes; blank, 9.The President declared Mr. Woodward elected.The Street Committee, on the communication from the Board of Education askiiig Council to have the ashes removed from the Public Schools, reported that they had no jurisdiction In the matter.bajne committee reported adversely on David Higgins’ petition for permission to operate an electrical machine on the streets.Same committee reported favorably on the petition of the Western Union Telegraph Company for permission to erect telegraph poles on Market street, Ninth ward.All these reports were adopted.The Water Committee reported favorably on the petition of Isaac Woodrow, for the extension of water pipes or Ninth street, above Jackson; Estimated cost, 100. Adopted.The City Treasurer reported: Balance in bank subject to current expenses, $17-821 82; to Cool Spring lteservoir, $4,908-95; total, 22,820 77.The Treasurer also reported that during the week he had paid out $7,500 00 on account of the reservoir; balance paid to date on the draft of the Water Com-missioneis, $14,430 65.The Chief Engineer reported 18 men employed in the Water Department.The Street Commissioner reported 36 men, 2 single, and 4 double teams employed in the Street Department.The following pay rolls read and passed; Water Department, $180; Street Department, $261 16; total, $450 16.Petitions and communications were read and referred, as follows:From the Water Commissioners asking for permission to use sand from the city sand pit, for the purpose of paving around the reservoir lot.From JamtB Bradford and Sam’l M. Harrington, trustees of the Del. Western Railroad asking permission to transfer to the Delaware Western llai I road Company, certain contracts between the city and the JWilmiDgton Hrestern Railroad Company, and a'-so all the rights and privileges granted by the city to said W. W. Company, relative to the occupancy of Wafer and otner streets.From Jacob 8. Wtldin and otberr for the curbing and guttering of Jack son street, from Delaware aud Brandy wine avenues.From A. C.
