Monsignor William P. Joyce, Member of Original Faculty, and Rev. John Sheehan, Class of ’29, Die During SeptemberThe Rt. Rev. Msgr. William P. Joyce, Vicar General of the Helena Diocese and a member of the original faculty at Carroll, was buried from Sacred Heart Church, Butte, this morning at a solemn pontifical Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. Joseph M. Gilmore, Bishop of Helena. Msgr. Joyce’s death on September 24 brought to two the total of diocesan priests to succumb within two weeks. Rev. John Sheehan, former Army chaplain and a Carroll graduate of the class of ’29, died in Butte on September 13.Msgr. Joyce was ordained to the priesthood in 1908, and in 1910 and 1911 he was a member of the original teaching staff at Carroll College, known then as Mt. St. Charles College. In addition to his duties as a faculty member, Msgr. Joyce was also an assistant at the St. Helena Cathedral and the chancellor of the diocese.From Helena Msgr. Joyce was transferred to Butte where he was an assistant at St. Lawrence parish. Bishop John P. Carroll, after whom Carroll College was named, appointed Msgr. Joyce to the pastorate at Boulder. Following his tenure in that city, he was named to the pastorate at the Sacred Heart church in Butte where he was stationed at the time of his death.In September, 1945, Pope Pius XII named Msgr. Gilmore, Bishop of Helena, celebrant of the solemn requiem Mass.Father Sheehan graduated with honors from Carroll in 1929 and after completing his theological studies at the North American College in Rome, was ordained a priest in 1933. Before entering the Army, Father Sheehan was the principal of Girls’ Central High School in Butte and was the Diocesan Superintendent of Education.After being sworn in to the Army, Father Sheehan took his indoctri-REV. JOHN F. SHEEHANnation training at the Chaplain’s School at Harvard University.Embarking for overseas duty in June, 1944, Father Sheehan was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division as chaplain. As a result of heroism displayed during the Battle of the Bulge and the assault on the Rhine, he was awarded the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star with cluster.
