Mansfield Ends Smother Attack Of Opponents, Subs Show Fight FEYRIA football fans sat stunned at the half last night after watching one of the ten best high school football teams in the state of Ohio roll up a 26 to 0 score. But by the time Mansfield high’s Tygers, with the second team playing most of the second half, completed their work with a 39-0 victory they got used to it. all .t The blocking the Elyria team saw in the first half was some thing new to them, and the de fensive work of the Tygers was also a revelation. And the scrap py pins of the Mansfield second team left many an Elyria player in a bruised and battered condi tion today. Elyria chalked up only two first, devtts, one against Mans field's first team deep in Elyria territory, and one against the second team in midfield. And the only Elyria scoring threat, offered on a recovered fumble in the last quarter inside the Tyger 20-yard line, was prompt ly smothered by the Tyger subs. “ * a The men in the black and white striped shirts proved Elyria’s best ball carriers as the Tygers were penalized no less than 180 yards, Leroy Lightnin’ Jones proved the Tygers' best offensive threat, while Joe Romano and Bob Windy Windigler stopped nine tenths of the Elyria offensive be fore it got started. Mansfield's first touchdown s came within five minutes of the opening whistle as Ken Krupp tore off a long gain to the Elyria 19-yard line, and Jones circled left end on a reverse for the remain ing distance. Brandt broke through the line for 20 yards, Jones picked up 13 on a reverse, Doolittle went for a first down on the 11, Brandt ducked for right, and Jones wheeled left end for three and the touchdown, Brandt’s kick was wide and it was 20-0. And before the half was over Doolittle took an Elyria punt of the home team's 40-yard line and returned it to the two, where Jones found no difficulty in trai ling the remaining distance for the fourth touchdown. Once more Brandt's kick was wide and it was 26-0. In the third period a 20-yard jaunt by Jones put the ball on the Elyria three-yard line. Jones went into the line for two yards, and Doolittle skirted right end for the touchdown. Again Brandt's kick was wide and it was 32-0. Midway in the quarter Doolit tle signaled for a fair catch on the Elyria 25, and was tackled, so Elyria was penalized to the 1% in the 61st play Chuck Condon went around tight end for a touchdown and this time Brandt's kick was good, mak ing it 39-0. From there on the Mansfield I second team took over, and while they didn’t score, because of pen altes and fumbles, they showed more fight than both of the start ing teams put together. And it looks like the Tyger team of 1942 will be all right too. It was the worst defeat Elyria had taken in three seasons, and lt could have been 70 to 0 just as easily as 39-0 if Coach Paul Snyder had elected to leave his first stringers in the game to roll tap the score. * Mansfield Pos.
