Groves Son 2V2 years to finish and included a complete reconstruction of the interchange with 1-81 in Cicero.The project, which was finished on time and on budget cost $21.8 million- The federal government paid for 90 percent of it; the state paid for the rest.Plans are in the works now to extend 1-481 north from Fulton to Oswego.With the completion of this link, travelers heading north or south can now bypass the city by taking1-481 from Nedrow through DeWitt to Cicero.Cicero officials hope the highway's completion will attract industry to the town.The last two parts of the highway between the Interstate 690 interchange in DeWitt and 1-81 in Cicero were marked by arguments about noise and damage to wetlands in the Cicero Swamp.A large portion of the new two-mile stretch will be lined with 16-foot-tall wooden noise barriers that were put up at the insistence of Cicero homeowners who feared traffic would create unbearable noise levels.After much discussion, residents near the highway decided on a wooden noise barrier when the state Department of Transportation gave them a choice of' wood or concrete.(Continued on Page B-4)
