By Oscar Haas The picture used in con nection with the installment in the New Braunfels Herald issue on Sept. 5, 1974, has evoked additional material concerning the story of the first English newspaper here, namely the New Braunfels Herald. Readers will recall the pic ture is of the present Dean Office Supply Company with a tiny building, pictured as an inset, and the two pictures each displaying over their front entrance the name, The Herald While preparing the manuscript for the story to describe the two buildings it so happened that Mr. and Mrs. Leo. J. Coers of Lockhart dropped by. They were sear ching genealogy data on Leo's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Heinrich) Coers. As they were shown the picture, Leo exclaimed: “Oh’, that tiny building is where the Albert CC. Coers — family published the Herald. Dad was editor and mother set type by hand. Later we moved to the Hoffmann building on Seguin Avenue, in which we had living quarters upstairs and printing shop on the ground floor According to Leo J., his parents moved on Aug. 1, 189 with one child, Alice (she now lives in Austin) from the Mission Valley School. And two days later ( Aug. 3, 1895) Leo. J., was born here in New Braun fels This winter, while he was enrolled in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in New Braunfels Academy was taught writing and reading in the German language, also German script (Schoenschreiben) —calligraph, by Prof. Albert C. Coers In 1904 Prof. Albert ©. Coers resigned his teaching position to become editor and publisher of the New Braunfels Herald Five more children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert C. Coers, of whom the youngest, Aurora, died in infancy. The other four were boys: Alfonso, Walter, Roy and Henry Three of the five boys,” says Leo. J., ‘became teachers. Two had more sense and became printers. Alfonso worked in San Marcos on the San Marcos Record and for the Austin American in Austin. In 1925 with my wife, and our young son Leo Jr., we moved to Lockhart, where for 20 years I worked for the Lockhart Post Register. I am still a subscriber of the New Braunfel Herald to keep up with happenings in New Braunfels. From Lockhart I started working in Austin for several job shops and the University Daily Texan, then for the Austin American now the American-Statesman for 25 years till my retirement. Alfonso died in 1961. Of the three school teachers, Walter is retired and lives with his wife in Waco. Roy is prin cipal of the McCallum High School in Austin. Henry is principal of Regency Elementary in San Antonio ever since its opening.’ Note: The genealogy data on Grandfather Henry Coers was not too difficult to find. It in cluded the year purchased and a record of land that now is at the bottom of Canyon Lake on which land Grandfather Coers had built a house. The house was acquired and moved to a hilltop by Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Whitehead of San Antonio. Mrs. Whitehead is making ap plication for a historical plaque for the Coers house. Data found included countries from which the grandparents came. This was quickly found in Pastor August Schuchard’s registers at First Protestant Church. Grandfather Henry Coers was a native of Hoheneggelsen, Hildesheim, Germany. He married Miss Karoline Startz, a native of Haberschlacht, Kingdom of Wurtemberg, here in New Braunfels in 1852. They had four daughters and three sons.
