Charlotte Moss, already a volunteer there, makes and gives 50 fleece blankets to ex-elementary school. BY JOHN WILKINSON STAFF WRITER Charlotte Moss is always at Moulton Elementary in Laguna Niguel on Thurs day mornings. Usually, the eighth-grad er is there to help volunteer in a kindergarten class be fore her late-start day be gins at Don Juan Avila Mid dle School. On Sept. 18, however, she was giving back in another way. Moss donated 50 fleece blankets that she made dur ing the past year to her former elementary school. The blankets will go to the health office. “I hope it makes them feel a little better, to have something like that; there is support, and people care about them, and they have a blanket,” Messy said. “Make them feel a little better, be cause I know you feel bad when you're sick. It’s not comfortable.” The project came about as a component of Moss’ bat mitzvah. Moss, who is about to turn 13, had her bat mitzvah in August and de cided to come up with her own Service project. “It thought it would be a good idea to do something that helps children that are sick and the public schools, so I decided making blan kets was good,” Moss said. The brightly colored, layered fleece blankets have frilly edges where the fabric has been cut and tied into tassels. There is a fa bric patch with a message that reads, “Snuggle and heal, blankets made with love by Charlotte.” When she first began putting the blankets togeth er in the summer of 2018, it took her around an hour to make each. Now it takes 30- 45 minutes depending on the size. She tried to work on them mostly during the summer, during weekends or while watching TV. “It really demonstrates that she has a strong sense of integrity and giving back at such a young age, it’s heartwarming,” Moulton Elementary Principal Jac queline Campbell said. On the morning when she donated the blankets, Moss briefly spoke to the current students at a morn ing ceremony. “To be able to share that with the students and for them to be able to see the real person, that’s a Moul ton Hawk, coming back and showing citizenship at a high level. I think it propels all of the students here to do it,” Campbell said. Afterward, she went in side to help with the kinder gartners for the remaining 40 minutes until she had to head to her own school. “She is very special. I think ... that’s her path. She has already chosen her path of giving and caring,’ Campbell said CONTACT THE WRITER. 1|@amanigueinense KEN STEINHARDT, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Charlotte Moss, 12, helps her brother Jared, 5, up the stairs as her parents, Joan and Dave, carry blankets Charlotte made to donate to her former school's health office.
