Warriors fall to 0-3 afBy Tim BurtIrvine World NewsDespite losing its third straight game, Woodbridge High's football team made some progress last week.But Coach Rick Gibson admits the Warriors have a ways to go.Woodbridge was able to move the ball against Dana Hills.But the Warriors came away with only one touchdown in a 17-9 loss Thursday night at Irvine Stadium.In addition, the Warriors had little success stopping Dana Hills' option style offense. Quarterback Nathan Barnett was elusive all night, rushingfor 222 yards on 23 carries and onetouchdown.I think there was some improvement in some areas, but not the kind of improvement we're looking for, Gibson said. The special teams continue to play well.Gibson noted the play of punter Gavin Hedstrom, long snapper Ricky Wolder and placekicker Shyan Moayedi.But Gibson acknowledges the Warriors are still struggling with a new offense.We're asking people to step up their play overall, Gibson said. We're learning a new system offensively and that's going to take some time. We just have to be patient.Woodbridge certainly had opportunities, but key mistakes at inopportune times cost the Warriors,Quarterback Mike Anderson completed 10 of 27 passes for 128 yards. Several balls were dropped by receivers, including one for a touchdown.It's not just the receivers, Gibson said. There are just breakdowns here and there.Woodbridge (0-3) was not able to get much going on the ground, either.Woodbridge's leading rusher was Tyler Welsh, who had 11 yards on six carries.The Warriors finished with minus 13 yards rushing.Dana Hills, led by Barnett, racked up yards against Woodbridge.He was tough,” Gibson said. But there were some missed assignments on our part. We need to start making plays. Being in position is one thing, but you have to make the plays.With the victory, Dana Hills snapped a 10-game losing streak dating back to last year when it defeated Woodbridge, 14-6.Dana Hills (1-1) took over on the Woodbridge 36-yard line following a short punt.Senior Derrick Clark bolted 23 yards to the 13.On the next play, Barnett ran in for a 13-yard TD.Woodbridge looked like it might counter on its next drive.The Warriors marched the ball to the Dana Hills 20-yard line.But two illegal procedure calls and one delay of game call pushed the ball back to the 35 where the drive eventually stalled.In the second quarter, Woodbridge drove the ball to the Dolphins' 19 yard line. But on a third-and-19 play, Coy Brackett sacked Anderson at the 34.Woodbridge broke the shutout when Moayedi kicked a 31-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.Dana Hills then moved ahead, 10-3, on a 27-yard field goal by Parker St. Claire with 1:56 left in the game.Woodbridge tried to move the ball on its final possession but on a fourth-and-20 play, Anderson was sacked at the 8-yard line.Dana Hills then moved ahead, 17-3, when Clark scored from 2 yards out with 34 seconds remaining.Woodbridge scored on the final play of the game when Anderson connected with Jason Gill on a 32-yard touchdown play.No conversion was attempted since time had expired.
