Why Not Left, TooTo the Editor:'My work requires me to spend a goodly amount of my lime driving around town in my automobile. On those- days when my horoscope, biorhythmic cycle. and just-not-my-day-itis converge on me {happenstance' occurrences which seem directly proportional with age). I feel as if 1 spend most of my time wailing-for the traffic lights lo change. Right-on-Red has helped me a little, but not enough. So with your permission I would like to make a couple of observations.Firstly, if other drivers (who never seem to realize Fm always in a hurry) would stay in .the left lane if they are turning left or going straight, then 1 could make more Rights-on-Kcd. 1 always do this out of pure courtesy and over-sensitivity to dirty looks. Being basically conservative, though, I-usually turn right..Secondly, is the matter of the purple of traffic lights. Havingnever actually read “ Purpose and Objectives of Traffic Lights , 1 just assume thelights are necessary only to allow angled lines of traffic to take turns at having the right-of-way. Old Gas Guzzler ^nd I could save a lot of time and money if we didn’t have to wail for nothing. When you think about it. why not Right-, Straight-, and Left-on-Red?I've discussed this with some other deep:thinkers. 1 ask one, a Dalton supporter, what John would think of this idea, He said his man would certainly consider all the angles. Another gentleman, a Howell backer, said he knew Henry would favor it if the labor unions approved. Not being a politician, Fm not taking a really strong stand on it. I'll stick to the middle of the road - if I can go Straight-on-Red!Don Dobbins 1206 Valley View Radford, Virginia 24141
