University students with families are facing a tough problem these days—the housing problem. Tom Booker, executive director of the Houston Housing Authority and ex-University student, has come up with his answer to a sit uation facing many University students with families. Under his plan, a special sec tion of the San Felipe Courts can be set aside for the use of Uni versity families. By living in this section, families can profit by the low-rent plan after meeting Hous ing Authority qualifications. MR. BOOKER points out how the low-rent plan can take the load off the University student who can't meet the high cost of adequate family housing. Under the plan, rent is charged in proportion to the family’s in come, not according to the size of their apartment. “This plan is ideal for the col lege student's family by providing him with modern living facilities he could not afford in any other rent district,” Mr. Booker said. To qualify, a married couple with no children must have an in come of less than $2400 per year. This family’s rent will be $35 per month, including all utilities. “INCOME QUALIFICATIONS will vary according to the number of children in each family,” Mr. Booker added. “However, veteran's disability pensions are not counted in a family’s income. Included in the apartments are four-burner, flat-top stoves, six foot refrigerators, and large, vent type heaters. The apartments vary in size, but all have a living room, combination kitchen-dinette, and from one to four bedrooms. Mr. Booker said that at the pres ent time the San Felipe housing area is 70 per cent filled, but there is room for at least 300 more families. THE HOUSING PROJECT is maintained through rent plus a yearly subsidy from the federal government. The federal subsidy makes possible the low cost of rent Anyone interested in the plan can contact Mr. Booker or Mrs. Jean Lindley at the Housing Au thority Administration Building on Buffalo Drive at Valentine Street. The completely sanitary apart ments are serviced with special sch buses each morning and afternoon “If University reaction to the plan is strong enough,” Mr. Booker said, “special buses running di rectly to the University may be put in operation,”
