Edgar Garrison Dodges Promise to Write by Falling Into Anothers Poetry, Edgar Garrison promised us faith fully to Write a learned and exhaust ive treatise on the Panama canal for publication in the Great and Only. Instead of redeeming his pledge he writes us a letter which not only fully confesses his delinquency but which in its very opening, trifles most audaceously with our editorial dignity. The letter is as follows: Ancon, Canal Zone, Sept. 10th, 1907 Dear Billy Sometime ago I promised you a letter‘on Panama. I have not got around to it yet, for I am afflicted with that infernal ‘‘manana’’ habit. Ibut L enclose here a choice effort of one of the boy, which you may use if I deemed advisable. It describes Panama better than my poor effort I would. Sincerely, Edgar. While the alleged poem reads thusly + FAREWELL 10 PANAMA ‘Advne* to thet, Palma, Home of the dark-eyed ‘conte.” Land of “mucho ealor' and “Wolen fur niente, Home of the waiting donkey and the allabound Ingenes, “Manana’7and “Graelas ‘ Dice' — bid farewell to thee: Farewell, ye gloomy “easus’’— (“mejor diche, prison cells,) Ye narrow, crooker “culles' reekin with gurlie smells, ‘Ye dirty little coffee shows and filthy ‘ pulnerias”” Stinking stables, dispatios and fetid “va nerias,” Where besirars ride on horebud: tie Spanish cavaliers, And vagabonds perambulate like jolly gamboliers, Where the “lavanderas! wash your “ropad!— when they feel so inclined. And hotel waiters strut about with their shirt tails out behind. Good-bye, ye Latin greases “Que vaya bien, pues adois,’ shore. Dirty: houses, dirty neoplé, despicable in: Departing 1 salute you in your fithiness and rot. Steaming and streaming with boiling: perspiration Seething and breathing with hurried respiration. ‘Panama, “Adds” forever. “tierra tan caliente.” Infernal crime of vicious turn and force “aguardiente.” “su atent servidor ’ my bout is on the Tt is reported that Warren Romans and Mark Clark are in Pierre, S. C. earning good wages. Don’t have your children hanging around the opera house door, when you can buy a season ticket for a dollar.
