Newt Ford Assassinated.Shot From Ambush by Unknown Party.Load of Shot Lodged in Side of Head and Neck and he FelKFrom His Wagon a Dead Man.Jeff Harwell Arrested and Lodged in Jail by Sheriff.Ou Tuesday morning about 7 :oO o’clock Newt Ford was shot from ambush while driving along a private road through the woods ah'... a half mile southeast of his horn* one mile east of Saltillo. Thesonmi of the gun attracted the attention of Mrs. Sallio Hall and her sou who were picking cotton within fifty yards of the tragedy The mules ran with the wagon and the boy followed and caught them while his mother went down to the road and fouud Ford’s body. He was not quite dead but breathed only a few times after Mrs. Hall got to where he lav. The boy went to Saltillo and reported the killing. Sqnire McNeil summoned a jury of inquest uud went to the scene and held an inquest over the body, the verdict being that deceased had come to his death by a gunshot wouud inflicted by unknown party. G. VV. Long, the sheriff, was notified aud getting D. W. Robins with his bloodhounds aud summoning a small posse at Saltillo, they went to the scene. The dogs took a trail aud ran to a liftla branch where the tracks of a smell mule were found. This track was followed to the path east of where Ford lay and took down this path runuiug east and was followed in that direction some distance. Fi-ually it led to a broom sage field aud was there lost. The posse here divided and went to the home of Mr. Harwell, some going up mi the north side of the house aud some 011 the south side. As ike sheriff approached from the uort 1 he saw Mr. Harwell with his two boys in the cotton field. When the latter discovered the sheriff the two boys started to the house walking rapidly, Jeff Harwell car. ryiug his gun. The old man uk; the sheriff and asked if he bad any other warrant agaiust his boy than the one for cutting Ford, an indictment having been found by tue grand jury for this latter offense. When informed by the sheriff that he had no other warraut old man Harwell went back to the house and brought both boys back with with him. The sheriff theu lo.-tv charge of Jeff Harwell aud brought him to Saltillo, where an afliduv . was sworu out before Squire McNeil charging him with the kiii;. .. of Ford. The arrest of vow; .'
