* January 24, 1871, Jengie Beatty (white) was convicted in tlie hustings court of Norfolk of murder in the second degree and sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary. She served out her term and went back to Norfolk. She had not been in that city; very long before she got into -a difficulty with a woman. Two other females attempted \ to separate the combatants, when “Irish Jennie” drew a knife and stabbed nil three. For this offence she was tried, convicted and sentenced to four years in the penitentiary. Subsequently the circuit court of liiohmond added five years imprisonment for second conviction, and one year was added to this for attempted escape.Jennie Beatty, better known as “Irish Jennie,” has been a noted character at- the penitentiary for the past fifteen years. She hua a terrible temper and it has cost her years of imprisonment. For the past two or three years, says Gen- Terry, the superintendent of the penitentiary, she has conducted herself very well indeed, violating no rules of the institution. Upon the recommendation of Gen. Terry the governor today pardoned the woman, and the papers will he sent to the penitentiary this afternoon.
