Wanted To Become Movie Star By SCOTT WIDMEYER And BOB KITTLE Of The Daily Mail Staff The relatives of Sara Jane Kahn de scribed her today as a shy woman who left Charleston during the early 1950s to be come a Hollywood movie star and wound up an ardent supporter of conservative Political causes on the West Coast. ‘Her dream was to become an actress; she wanted to get into the movies,” said the attempted assassin's former brother in-law, Alvin Schirmtz, now a Wheeling resident. ‘She lost all touch with the family after she left Charleston,” said Schmutz, who was divorced six years ago from Sara Jane's sister, Ruth. “Sara Jane was very pleasant, but she stayed off from the rest of the family. Sometimes she lived in a dream world of her own,”” Schmutz added. Sara Jane's second husband, Dr. Willard Carmel of Danville, Calif., was in a state of shock today after learning of his former wife's arrest in San Francisco, a spokes man said, Carmel was married to Sara Jane from 1969 to 1973. The California doctor said his wife became heavily involved in Republi can party politics during their five-year marriage. Bob Hughes, spokesman for Carmel, said the couple met in the late 1960s at a social occasion in the Walnut Creek, Cal if., area. According to Hughes, the woman, while married to Carmel, was a housewife and an enthusiastic volunteer in the senatorial campaign of former Sen. George Murphy, R-Calif. Murphy served in the U.S. Senate until 1970 when he was defeated by John Tun ney Besides her activity in the Murphy cam paign, Hughes said, Sara Jane worked in the campaigns of local and state politi cians. The couple had no children. “When Dr. Carmel was notified of the assassination attempt, he was shocked. In fact, he is still in a state of shock, Hughes said. However, according to Hughes, the doctor is continuing to see patients this week despite the events. Carmel works as a pre-paid physician at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek, Calif., a suburb of 30,000 about 30 miles from San Francisco, . The 54-year-old doctor and his previous wife lived in an $85,000 home in nearby Danville, Hughes said. Carmel is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. Attempts to reach Sara Jane’s other two former husbands, John Aalberg of Los An geles, Calif., and Sidney L. Manning, were unsuccessful. When contacted Monday by the Los An geles Times, Aalberg denied ever having been married to Sara Jane Kahn.
