“Soft Drink Price’! Visited last Night by Federal Officers. The Edward hotel “soft drink par lor, opened three weeks ago where once was the hotel cafe, Sub West Twelfth street, was darkened last night after it had been “visited” by Frank T. Digges, government operative, tie several assistants. ‘Three negro witers were arrested and a large quantity of what the government men say to intox icating Hquor confiscated. There were other places in Kansas City that went dark soon after the raid. None but the three negroes were ar rested at the Indward, but there were many patrons in the place, and after the arrest these telephoned the news to friends at other places that might not stand the fight of federal investigation. The names of the nepro waiters are: John ©. Botts, 916 Highland avenue; James Motley, 1315 Woandland avenue, and Jesse Burrell, 2206 Woodland ave nue, Joel Donegan, proprietor of the place, said he had teased it to gutaide men. The negroes are held at police headquarters for the government. Digges said last night that he and other government operatives entered the place as ordinary patrons, and bought Hauor from the negroes who served it at the tables. The jazz band was playing a decidedly animated number. Couples were tame ing, and the tinkle of glasses added to the variety of sounds that blended with the Jazz. Digges and the other opera tives occupied seats at different tables. At a prearranged signal the government mien rose, “escorted the waiters to the rear of the place, and began a search for Hquor. Word had passed among the patrons that the place was being raided, and there was a rapid ami general exo dus to the outsides. _A patrol wagon was sent to the place to take the negroes to poker headquar ters. The liquor taken in charge by the officers will be tested today, and upon the results of that test will depend, they say, whether or not the negroes will be held for trial and others connected with the place arrested. Need 1,000 Men in Scottsbluff, Neb. A call for a thousand men to aid In handling the beet sugar crop in the sugar refineries at Scottsbluff, Neb. was received last night by Daniel J. Dunn, superintendent of the Missouri state em ployment bureau office, 804 Grand avenue. Mr. Dunn said the refineries offer good housing and living conditions high wages and four months work. S treet Car Hire Waons Driver Injured Edward Hanahan, a teamster, 134 Topping avenue, was injured yesterday when a fardesty and Jackson street car collided with the wagon he was driving at St. John and Oakley avenue.
