Work of Cleaning City Must Be Suspended Temporarily—Many Businesses . Are Handicapped.The city sanitary department is entirely without negro laborer*. There will be no work a* to cleaning the streets or collecting garbage and refuse Monday.Chief John Jentzen, after spending a large portion of the morning attempting to get hi* cart driver* and other negro laborer* to work, found that Itwag Impossible.'There were some 50 of the 240 men who reported to the stable* on Hell-wond avenue at * o'clock this morning,” Halil Chief Jent*en. I'Tom this I hope to get a number of carte out early tomorrow.The situation Is one which the people will understand, and I wish to ray that the sanitary department will do everything In Its power to keep the city dean under, the trying circumstances.This state of affair* !m by no means confined to the sanitary department. The negro drivers all over the city are, to use a hackney phrase, conspicuous by their absence.The cab companies are entirely at a loss in the matter of getting men to drive their vehicles.The Morrow Transfer Company had only 25 drivers at work Monday out of the usual 115.Throughout the city, building anil work of all kind* dependent on negro labor Is almost at a standstill.It is the general opinion, however, that this slate of affairs will not last a great while.
