INDIANA AFFAIRS.* Testimony of the Defense in the* Hinshaw Case. STATE CONCEDES A GOOD RECORDto the Accused Clergyman—Contention of the Preacher's Counsel—Alleged Threats from Roby Against Gov. Matthews—Ti-*, osa Suffers a 9100,000 Fire—Coming Re-Jmblican Conference—Diphtheria Fpi-deinic at Washington.Danville, Sepfe 24—In the trial of the Rev. William E. Hinshaw the defense i has begun its examination in chief, the . state having conceded that the defen dant ’ 0 reputation for peace and quiet is good. This will shorten the trial. Dr. Strong, Who dressed the defendant's wounds, testified that the marks on the accused’s left arm could not have been made by the defendant himself as the marks were made with the left hand. Witness said that the deceased also had finger marks on her arms. Upon cross-examination ho stated that the undershirt which he out from the defen dant was powder-burned. Dr. Barnhill testified that the investigation was not held secretly, as stated by the state. This explodes the theory advanced by the state that the investigation was carried on at the instance of Hinshaw and his friends, and under their supervision. Emma Hamerick, who lives at Belleville near the parsonage, said that defendant’s treatment of his wife was the very best.Contention of the Defense. The defense has examined a number of witnesses as to character and reputation to show as claimed that Hinshaw was not the kind of a man who would commit such an awful deed, and that he had no motive for so doing. On the quesSon of motive the contention of the defense is that Hinshaw was very successful in his profession as a minister; that his work was pleasing not only to himself, but to his parishioners; that his churches prospered under his ministration, and that much of his success was due to the great assistance rendered by his wife, who was, indeed, a helpmate in all the name implied, and labored as hard in church work as he did; that she was very popular and. that he needed her services continually, and thus there would be no motive for taking her life and losing her valuable assistance. No Reason to Wish her Dead.Had Hinshaw’s work been a failure, had he been handicapped by his wife, or had she been disliked among those among whom he was laboring it might be possible that In a fit of despondency Hinshaw had killed her and then attempted his own life. But here the conditions were such that he would be anxious for her to live and aid him in the noble work he was doing. There are many here who say that the case made by the state is not as strong as the public supposed would be made, but the attorneys for the state say they have not completed their case, but will bring out strong evidence against the prisoner from his own witnesses. People who are not prejudiced on either side exexpress the belief that there will be a mistrial
