Upon a full investigation of the matter, we find Mr. Slane • bid was four dollars and fifty-five cents per acre, and two dollars per week for boarding the paupers. There are one hundred and sixty [.acres of land in the poor farm, and we suppose oneWABHow will proposition Erie Canal ? to attract somore.By an arrbetween thetook this Ca a portion ofhalf is in cultivation. We do not know the number of paupers at the poor fartn, but will put it down at fifteen on the aver-ase. This number at Shine’s bid wouldramount to thirty dollars per week, and to fifteen hundred ami sixty dollars for the vcar. Deduct the rent of the land from theboarding of the pnupers, and you have thesum of $1005, which would have been due Mr. Slane out of the county treasury.Mr. Stephenson’s bid was three dollars per acre for the land, and $2,25 for boarding the paupers. The same calculation as made above would make his offer for the land $240, and his bill for boarding the paupers would amount to $33,75 per week, or to$1755 for the year. Deduct $2,40, the rentof the land, and there is left $1515,, the a-mount which will be due to Stephenson outof the'county treasury. Mr. Slane and Mr. Stephenson are both good men— both sober and industrious, and either of | t() them would have done their duty as superintendents of the county Asylum. Then why reject Mr. SInne’s bid, and take Mr. Stephenson’s? Would the Conimissxmcrs, or either of them, if they had been renting their own land, have taken the lowest bid? We think not. llence it was their duty to have taken the lowest bid, and make the best bargain they could for the county. The county is now in debt. The Com. missioners have borrowed several thousand dollars, upon which the people are paying a greater rate of interest than six per cent., and vet favoriteism or partisan political considerations govern them in making contracts for the county. We ask the ta» paying-peo pie of Boone county, are you willing to be thus imposed upon? We have heard men say it was as much as they could do to make enough to pay their taxes, and we don’t at all wonder at it Neither do we wonder that the county treasury is bankrupt, llow could it be otherwise when the Commissioners wili give $228,50 for publishing the t!c; linquenfc list, when it could have been done for $85, and throw away $400 in renting the poor farm when it could have been saved.SICK OF LECOMFTOX AND KANSAS.
