Extract of a letter from an American Citizen in London, to his friend in N. York, dated July 7, 1818.“My stay in London has been protracted longer than I intended, and I shall, nevertheless, have to leave various things and persons unattended to, which it would be interesting to see. before I proceed to thecontinent. The last three days have afforded me no small satisfaction. On the first, in company with W Allen.and his friend W. H Pepys, I visited the Royal Observatory. at Greenwich, in compliance with a special invitation from the Astronomer Royal. There we met a committee of the Royal Society, consisting of the President, Sir Joseph Ranks, Earl Morton, Sir Evc-rard Home. Dr. Herdiel, and others, whose names are famous in science. A Her examining the instruments in the Observatory, the company all look dinner at a hotel, on the banks of the Thames, and spent the afternoon together, in that kind of social nnd philanthropic relaxation, which it is grateful to enjoy. The fineness of the day, and the very numerous vessels which passed as we sal at table, (among them two Steam boats.) added to the satisfaction of the occasion.Yesterday was held the I fith anniversary meeting of the British anil Foreign School Society, at Free Mason's Tavern. The room was tilled to overflowing; a great number of Friends. 'oaMandpemale, birng present. The Duke of Sussex presided ; and after the report was read by my worthy friend Joseph Foster, a number of eloquent Speech** were made, partir ularly one by Mr. Wilberfurce. A particular statement of the proceedings i- in the papers. The Duke acquitted himself very handsomely.To-day I visited Newgate in company with Mrs. Fry, and her coadjutors. Tho reformation they have effected in the habit* of tin* female prisoners, continues to attract the attention of the public, and nielim« the room in which they assemble is crowded with visiters. That was the case to-day. Among the latter was professor Pielef. oi Geneva, Robert Owen, the projector for llit-poor, and a number of fashionable females. The prisoner* conducted thorn-, selves with great decency. They were called into the committee room, ami being seated. E. Fry read a chapter in a very appropriate manner, and made some suitable comments upon it. The company were very favorably impressed. The matron remarked tome, that when Mrs. Fry was to read the bible, there was not room for them all, for the prisoners we re so eager to get into the room. The subject of pr’*on discipline, and the pena! code, i* becoming more and more interesting to the nation. The report of the committee on this subject, and a copy of a well written volume, by P. Buxton, a hro-ther-in-law of Mrs. Fry. will shortly be forwarded by the Society.*''
