li A very melancholy event to. k place in th* town of Beflicl, op Ancfrofcog^en river, in the county of York, on the night oi the 5th inft.int. A Mr. Jonathan Bean of that place. w.«s found dead on the m rning of the 6th. in his own houfe, hanging by his neck with a piece of a rope, which he had cu? from the bed cord, with a koife which lie lefi on a table near where he was hanging. His feet flood fi m on the floor, and iii pp or ted a great part of his body, which flood Upright; A chair, on which it was fup poled he flood, when he fattened the rope to the ilring pieces, which fupported the chamber floor, was found laying ag.iiqft him a little above his knees, and the fore part of it was almgll level with the floor of the houfe. He was alone irr'1 the houfe that night ; his wife being gone to make a vifit to one of her daughters, and 110 one went into the houfe till the next morning, when he was found dead. He had been for fcvcral years in a flrange fltuation, and appeared to be deranged in his mind ; and had not for lome time been from home, and fcarcely out of his houfe. He had fiequcntly told his wife that he intended to make way with hlmfelf; but as he had made 110 attempt to do it, though he had frequently been left at home alone, till this fatal moment, none fuppofed him to be in earned, and paid little or no attention to what he had faid, relative to dellroying his life ; nor thought it neceffary to watch him, lo prevent the awful deed. For fume time previous to his deftruion, he had I een more fociablc than he had been for feveral years, and appeared quite rational in his mind. He was juft entered upon the 81ft year of his age. A coroners inqueft was called upon the body, and the jurors1 vcr-di«fl was, “ That he voluntarily and felonioufly did kill and murder himfclf, by hanging himfclf with a rope, which he provided for that purpofc.”
