MOSTLY SMILING - W.H.S. nd visiting Frenchajm B -11 -•If - ^ TI i _■A • ; 1Students From FranceThe Franco-Americai Cultural Exchange enabled 55 French indents and eight chaperones to visit Wlathrop between Aag. 28 and Sept. 10,1910.Approximately 60 families ofjunior nod senior high school students hosted guests, principally from Ivry and Vitry, suburbs of Paris.Many and varied experiences were provided the visitors to Winthrop by the American participants in the exchange ■program. The School Committee provided funds to hire a bus to transport the visitors form the airport into Winthrop in addition to sponsoring a dance and dinner for them; the Knights of Columbus sponsored a dance, and the Board ■ of Selectmen contributed to the program money with which a breakfast was enjoyed at Brothers Restaurant. French students enjoyed Winthrop thoroughly experiencing its beaches, stores, restaurants, sports facilities and theater.Families generously opened their homes extending American hospitality in a variety of ways. Barbecuesand parties accentuated the two week visit. American hosts and chaperones accompanied guests to the Governors Office, the Priidendal Center, the Esplanade, museums, the Boston stores, shopping malls, Rockport, Cape Cod, on harbor cruises oh a trip to Nan-tasket Beach and many more places too numerous to name.The highljpht of the exchange program was the daily life shared amongst Winthrop families. Their American way of life made its impression as did hot dogs, hamburgers breakfast cereals and many other commonplace items which characterize lives.The Franco American Cultural Exchange was undeniably a huge success. A sincere thank you is extended to the many, many people without whose help and cooperatiion the program could not have been so rewarding to those of us who experienced some facet of the Franco-American Cultural Exchange.i
