Lions blow lead andfall to SEMSU 34By Bill BallJOPLIN — The Missouri Southern State College Lionsblew a 17-7 lead and fell to the Southeast Missouri State University Indians 34-24 in the opening game of the season for the Lions before a packed house at Junge Stadium.The; game was a wild and woolly affair which saw almost anything happen that could possibly happen in a football game.The! tilt was marked by penalties on both sides as the Lions were penalized 100 yards and the Indians of Coach Jim Loehr were penalized for a total of 105Iyards.At one time both teams had their entire squads on the field as tempers flared and two players were battling it out on the ground at the ,50-yard line.Southern started like a house afire when on the second play of the game Lydell Williams broke through tackle for 84 yards and a Missouri Southern six-pointer and Harvey Derrick booted the extra point.The Indians were not to be denied: Taking the ball on their own 40 they moved in 12 plays to the Southern five where Jim Weiser, quarterback, hit Ed Slaughter in the end zone for the touchdown. Hale carriedlt;to the 49 and an interference call gave the Lions first and 10 on theIndian 45. Hale was thrown for a■loss to the 47 and then gained to the 36. Williams picked up to the 16.Hale was thrown for a loss to the 25 and faced with a fourth down situation Derrick came on for a field goal. He kicked from the 32 for a 42-yard three pointer that barely cleared the uprights to give the Lions a 17-7 lead with 27 seconds left in the first period.John Busalacki squelched an Indian TD when, on the second play after the kickoff he snared a Weiser aerial in the end zone and the Lions took over on their own 20 and moved to the 24 where Derrick tried another field goal from the 31 only to go wide.The Indians next TD came with 1:19 left in the first half when the Lions were forced to punt and the Indians put the ball in play on their own 33 and just six plays later Weiser hit David Goncher in the end zone for the TD, but the try for extra points was blocked and both teams went to the dressing rooms at the half with Southern in command17-13.The Indians came out throwing in the second half and on their first possession ran and passed to a TD with Anthony WallaceCHANNEL MASTERBest deal in sight - in Black White!going over from the two and Gross kicking the PAT to give the Indians a lead of 20-17 with 12:02 left in the third period.The Indian defense stiffened and the Lions couldn’t get untracked and were forced to punt to the Indians and they took over on their own 20 and moved in 11 platys to the touchdowir with Bobby Everage going over from the three. Gross split the uprights and the Indians had a 27-17 lead with 26 seconds left in the third period.But then it was Southern’s turn and they moved from their own 29 to the 20 in eight plays and two penalties where Hale hit Anders with a pass and Derrick booted the PAT to make it 27-24 with the Indians on top with 11:21 left in the game.The Indians took the kickoff on their own 20, ate up the clock, passing only where necessary and in 14 plays moved to the TD with Weiser going over from the 20. Gross again kicked the extra point to give the Indians their final 34-24 victory.Southern tried in the remaining period but could not get the offense going and punted to Southeast and the Indians ran out the clock.Southern’s next outing will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Ft.
