The students are residents for seven weeks on the third floor of Guinn Hall. Fourteen girls are on the floor, two per suite. Those who are married participate in the management course in an actual family situation.The purpose of the laboratory is to give practical experience in all areas of home living through budgeting and food management, proper use of equipment, management of time and energy, and to help the student create high standards of home living.“I think the course gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of management principles and to test some of the principles learned. said Mrs. Lillian Linebarger, instructor for home management.Mrs. Linebarger stresses theimportance of including the basic four in the student's menus and the exclusion of rich desserts once the basics are added.“We do ask the girls to try new foods, foods that are new to them, said Mrs. Linebarger.The students decide the budget for food and cleaning supplies. They also pay for the food themselves.The grade is based on management skills, techniques, and content of the student’s daily notebook. Each girl sets up her goals of what she wants to accomplish, which is a way we can individualize, Mrs. Linebarger said.Myrtle Dunn, senior home economics major from Marshall, said, “I've been cooking since I was eight years old. I come from a large family and I enjoy cooking. To me. it’s a way of applying everything in home management.“I’m excited about the course, said Jackie Baker, senior home economics major from El Paso. “It’s an experience where youcan really plan your mefpui. This is the first time that I feel tH^ kitchen will be my own, said Jackie.Regina Fontenot, senior clothing and fashion merchandising major from Ames, said, “We are required to solve the problems we are facing in the lab. Living in the apartment is more practical, it’s a unity thing. I enjoy is a wonderful course.Corliss Board, senior clothing and costume design major from Fort Worth, said. “We plan our meal around our budget. Youlearn how to time your cooking and cope with certain problems that might arise.The home management course also includes an eating out experience. The students pay for the meal and select the place to eat. In the past students have chosen Neiman Marcus in Dallas for a noon buffet. The event goes to show that the work of a good homemaker is often rewarded.
