Chamber of CommerceSecures Excavator FactoryGround was broken Tuesday for the construction of the plant of The International Excavator Company, the first manufacturing enterprise of Importance, employing skilled mechanics; to locate nt Hayward. This company has just purchased about four'^acres of laud on the Southern Pacific, right of way, opposite the depot, in the Hayward City Tract, and a large building embodying the most' modern factory features, la now being erected. •The main building of the plant Is one hundred teet \ride. The lighting of the buildings will be very efficient And along the most approved lines, the first building containing 12« windows, mostly double, in addition to 800 square feet of glass in the sky lights.- The concrete piers and foundations are being Installed by Contractor Thos. B, Khar ell. of Hayward, and the force In his employ will be augmented by the addition of a dozen carpenters by the end of the week, and construction work rushed with all speed.The company, which Is composed of Oakland and Hayward capitalists, will manufacture the patent Allen Traction Excavators, which are designed for nil kinds of earth and gravel excavating and loading operations, similar to the work upon which the steam shovel is employed. The field of operation of these excavators, however, is much broader than that uf the steam shovel or the usual ditching machines, as it is claimed they will work equally well in any kind of excavating, canal digging, irrigation ditch or lateral work, large sewer work, railroad work. street work and mining. It is claimedthat the Allen Excavator operated by one man does 4He w ork of 40 to 50 m£n and several t^ams, and that its operation Is therefore very economical and profitable. They cost about one-third as much as a steamshovel.The machinery is ready to be installed us soon us the building iscompleted, and an initial force ofabout 25 mechanics tvlll be employed, this force to be Increased from time to time as the plant is enlarged.The president and general manager of the company is Win. Angus, of Hayward. The other directors are: A. W. Beam, of Hayward; S. A..Hackett, B. C. Dyer, K. U. Bmlth, b\ P. Allen and R. J. Hough, of Oakland, the lagt named being also the attorney for the corporation. Other local people who are associated with the enterprise are: M. 0. Petersen,John A. Park, cashier of the First National Honk, and Judge Prowse.Several other localities were trying to secure the location of the plant In their vicinity, but through the efforts of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce und with the assistance of the people interested they succeeded in getting the plant located at Hayward.The citizens of Hayward, who are connected with the company, are to be commended for their public spirited effortx in securing the location of the plant at Hayward. The skilled mechanics to be employed will prove very desirable home making citizens of Hayward, and this city will bo largely benefited. As the excavators will be used In oil the western states and elsewhere Hayward will receive considerable favorable advertising as the home uf the Industry.In the opinion of the officials of the company.
