MAID OF THE MIST.The Tran Purrhaard by a Wedlrlnr 51 an and D«roral«d Will* AdrrrtUe-■enli.A dispatch from Buffalo N. Y. says. The n—ge of the Maid of the Mist through the rapids in 1HG1 had attract ed some attention. A great thought struck the people to benefited, and they resolved to build a duplicate of the steamer and send it through the rapids. An old wood-barge was bought at Tonawanda and token to the falls. As far as could be conveniently done without incurring much expense it was built up tor**cmbla the little steamer which had made the passage. It was the hollowest kind of a sham, however. In the wheel-house were no paddles, the pine wheel was connected with no rudder, the stovepipe smoke-stack emitted smoke from a east off stove. Here the similarity of this fraud to the old Maid of the Mist ended. Soma of the railroads entered into the scheme, and Sept. 6 was extensively advertised as the time when the grandest spectacle ever seen at the mighty Niagara could be witnessed.To-day saw perhaps 40,000 people at the river »o witness the fane. It was the intention to pnint the sham and christen her the Maid of the Mist, hut yesterday a patent medicine man stepped in and bought the boat. Mr.P. A. Porter, of the Niagara Fulls Gazette, who looked upon theatfairas an interesting excitement and invested some money, promptly withdrew from all connection with it. The greutest of Niagara frauds went on to full fruition, just the same, however. The boat was fifty-two feet in lengtli with an eighteen-foot beam, and drew oae foot of water, A dummy pilot was put on board. The paddle-boxes and other parts of the boat bore advertisements of the patent medicine. In advance of the boat a big raft with a banner advertising another patent medicine was sent down the rapids. A shoemaker also sent through a device advertising his wares. At 8:48 the boat entered the rapids, and in two and u half minutes she was at the neck of the whirlpool. Still turning around she was run straight across the basin, and in nine-tee, minutes from starting ran her nose against the bank. Everything was in place, and the lxat was little injuirea. An iron rail was used as a drag. The boat was finally shoved otF and went out of the whirlpool, bringing up at Lewiston. This was the tame trip of the new Maid of the Mist, which called out halfjof Western New York and Canada. The trial demonstrated nothing beyond the subline frauds that may be prepetrat- f ed at Niagara.
