THE* ABB PROTECTIONISTS.Every vote that shail be cast at the next election for Thomas Henry Cai ter for congress, and every vote that shall be cast for the Republican state legislative ticket means a vote to further the schemes of the Missoula Mercantile company of Missoula. That corporation is the wealthiest in the entire northwest and the bulk of its wealth has been acquired at the expense and misery of its thousands of ifl-paid and oppressed employes, at the expense of national weulth in the wholesale slaughter of government timber aggregating in value untold millions of dollars; at the expense of the nation’s honor in the debauching of men in high places, who were placed there to represent the whole people and not alone the Missoula Mercantile company. That’s the succinct story, and shameful though it may be it will dwindle into insignificance compared with what it will be nnless the sturdy yeomanry of MontanS shall rise up In their majesty on October 1, and rebuke this monster corporation by the defeat of its chosen candidates Thomas Henry Tarter and Wilbur F. Sanders. This corporation is spending money like water in Missoula county and in all of the doubtful” counties throughout Montana to elect a Republican state legislature and Thomas Henry Carter to congress. Special railway trains are now being run op and down the Bitter River valley with Carter and Sanders on board and these emissaries have been instructed to use the M. M. C. brand in total disregard of anything and everything except the wishes of the Missoula Mercantile company. Colonel Sanders’ blindness to the rights and welfare or the people and the keenness of his vision when he is permitted to gaze upon the money bags of corporations are facts as well known to the people of Montanu as they are to the Miner. Thomas Henry Carter Is comparatively a stranger to the people of Montana but that he wears the M. M. C, collar and that he is tattooed with its brand from head to foot, no unprejudiced man will deny who has ever seen him stripped. Can the servant disobey his muster? or would he enslave himself except with the intention of doing his master’s bidding? If Thomas II. Carter shall be sleeted to congress he will have to cancel a debt with the M. M. (’., and the money and negotiable paper which it will require he will be compelled to wring from the toiling masses of Montana. It will be done, of course, in an indirect manner, but it will nevertheless take just so much from honest labor and transfer it to the colossal coffers of the M. M. C. Carter and Sanders are protectionists, that is, they believe in protecting the M. M. C. aud they will do it if elected.retrace its ateps to where it stands rather than that it shall take oi^e step forward. What a grand spectacle it presents. Were it not for its honored traditions it wouldn’t have strength' enongh to append Its signature to its last will and testament, which is the only act tha! remains for it to do.WHY IS IT?Why is it that bo many men who an honest in every other relation in life an dishonest iu politics? Why is it that so many newspaper) that are honorable, impartial and truth ful in the discussion of every other sub ject are dishonorable, unfair, prejudice) and dishonest the moment they come ii contact with politics? Is it possible tba American politics have descended to tha depth of moral degradation where men contact with it jeopardizes every loft] attribute in human nature? aud if so what will be its destiny? Politics ii America is but another name for self government and its stability rests en tirely upon that broad principle of righ which existed before governments wer institute)! among men, and which wil endure when the last fabric of politica compact shall have perished. Thetheor; of onr government is beautiful in it conception. It has given to poetry it most sublime sentiment, to song its mos captivating melody, and to eloquence it loftiest flights and most touching pathos We read, we listen and a deep-hiddei responsive chord is touched and we an thrilled with patriotism. But how dif fereut the practice of self-governmen has come to bp from the theory; how dif ferent practical politics from the tlieor that is so eloquently spoken and written tlt; awaken the natural love of liberty am enlist the sympathies and co-operatioi of men! If there is any man who doubt it, let hhu enter the over-erowded pro fesaiou of the politics of to-day. and 1 he cau go through one campaign with out being kicked and jostled until hlt; is morally black and bine, then, indeed is he fit company for the Rods. But tin permanency of our institutions demaudt a reformation in the politics of the day and this can only be accomplished by the introduction within the politica! arena of a class of men that beloug tc every community who hold aloof Iron-entering lest they shall at least become the mark of prejudice, slander and all in politics that tend to dethrone self-respect and call forth the obnoxious criticism of others. Let the reformation begin at once iu Butte, and let the Helens Journal and the Inter Mountain be the first to sigu a compact and an invitation to all good citizens to join iu the work There are honest men and good citizem now in Montana politics but they imisl feel awfully lonesome, especially on tin Republican side of the fence.THAT DEADLY FA RAI.I.KI..
