fllaeevovy eTCBal Is **w Bra. ^With great pleasure we inform our readers! Ql of the entire success of Ur. Kersteman’s ex- 0C peri men t in boring for coal in this city. Wc Ja noticed aereral months ago the commence- J meat of this important boring experiment, Vf and have several times since alluded to its cv progress. Ur. Kersteman was fully satisfied ^ from evevy geological sign and development,, re and from an examination especially of the Ju extent and dip of the Newburgh strata, that m J5vansrilie most lay on an immense bed of, M coal. Satisfied of this, lie located ou a spot %t just below the city, made purchases of land in that vicinity, and commenced boring for , n' coal. He also obtained the right from the w city of Evansville to run a tunnel with a roil-road track under any streets of the city, at the depth of 360 feet below the durlace, * ^ promising to thus deliver coal m the heart‘ of the city, at the same price it wm *uld a t w the principal abaft. . yiAil his preliminary arrangements mado,’*( Ur. K. prosecuted his work lively, and last ^ week had the pleasure of penetrating s large vein or stratum of coal, the res) extent ol f u which he has not inlormed us, more than to. u assure us it ia entirely satisfactory to him- w self. He will commence sinking a shaft; j near the late Dr. McDowell's residence in a ^ few days. By probably the first of December, he will reach the coal. In two or three years be contemplates digging and deliver-. ^ tng coal right in the heart of the city at the rate of 80,000 bushels a day if desired! We have regarded aB an era in the history 0 of Evansville, tne day when Mr. Kersieman1* vv experiment in search of coal should prove ° soceaseful. With sll the elements close at *1 band, we only required good coal at our : * doors* to give us greater advantages than l! any other city on the river for becoming os celebrated for manufacturing as for com mer- dal advantages. Eureka! It is found! Coal abounds around us—that we knew before—, * hut coal in vast beds is lying under our feet * * awaiting but the tooch of the hand of man to J! be ready for ail his purposes. We needed but the surety of this to mark a new era in } ° our history. Mr. 1C. has given ua this surety i and ii* a few months we shall begin to rea- ° \\t • b«t bit discovery may be worth more to b .o both our railroads. We shall have ' u. to say say on this subject. *Evansville Journal. 9
