SANFORD — Sanford Regional Airport is closed for approximately one week, to allow for construction at the intersection of two runways. The closure began at 5 a.m. today while construction crews work 24 hours a day to remove old pavement at the intersection of runways 7-25 and 14-32. _t Airport Manager Dana Parry said the one-week closure is a critical part of the wider recon struction project, which totals about $5.2 million. The Federal Aviation Administration is cov eting 95 percent of the cost, while the state picks up 2.5 per cent of the tab, and the munici pality the remaining 2.5 per cent. Contractors will install nine inches of new base material and four inches of new pave ment. As well, they will install new signs and lighting. Parry said the work will extend into taxiway “E” to cre ate a new, squared-off end to runway 25. “To ensure the safety of con struction crews, fixed wing air craft must not land or depart on runway 14-32, on the grass adjacent to 14-32, or anywhere else on the airport,” said Parry. “If the weather supports paving on Thursday and Friday, we hope to have runway 14-32 open on Saturday; however, please don’t assume this to be the case,” he said. Parry advised pilots to check first and said he would notify pilots as soon as runway 14-32 is safe to open. Runway 7-25 will remain closed, as it has been since May. All runways will be marked with yellow “Xs,” and access to taxiways and runways will be barricaded during the closure period. Runway and taxiway lights on 14-32 will be turned off. Portland and Boston Approach Controls have been notified of the closure, Parry said. Heavy, slow-moving con struction vehicles will be enter ing and departing the airport 24 hours a day from a gate at the intersection of Routes 109 and 99. Message boards, signs, police details and flaggers will help ensure the safety of the motoring public along Route 109, he said. Parry this morning said it is expected that the entire recon struction project will be com pleted, and both runways reopened for business at the end of October or the first of November.
