Two big plays and a ball hawking defense proved too much for the Fredericks burg Billies last Friday night as the visiting Brady Bulldogs kept their record unblemished in downing a rugged host team, 14-6. The Bulldogs now apart a 3.0 record while Fredericksburg drops to 2.1. It was a sweet victory for the Doggies who had not defeated a Fredericksburg team since 1970. Brady fans were still buzzing about the win Saturday morn ing and hopeful that the hard-earned victory is just the thing that will push the Bulldogs “over the top” and on to their first district cham pionship since 1972 After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs hit the Hillies with two big scoring plays within just a bit over four minutes in the third period. Then the tough Bulldog defense dug in and held the Billies as they gallantly attempted to pull the game out. Speedy running back Chris Jones was bottled up most of the night, but when he did break out, it was a biggie. The huge one was a yard scamper after taking a pitchout from QH Ira Routt. A few minutes later Routt speared split end Danny Bar rera with a 5-yard aerial to give the Doggies their second TD. Jones finished the night, a slim one for Brady offensively, with 117 yards on 19 carries, but many times he was stopped for no gain or bases. Fredericksburg's top rusher was hard running Stan Davia, who accounted for 82 yards on 15 carries Actually, the Billies won the battle of the statistics, 222 to 168, and more than doubled Brady in first downs, 13-6, but the Dogs won the war and the scoreboard. The Brady defense, led by linebacker James Timms, did what a number of great pro teams do, “bend, but not break.” On numerous occasions the Dogs thwarted Billie drives by intercepting passes and recovering fumbles. Freder icksburg had six turnovers to Krady's three. The Bulldogs put themselves in a hole early as Davis returned the opening kickoff 44 yards to the Fredericksburg 49. Chomping up big chunks of yardage on the ground, the Billies marched to the Brady 25 where Davis hit off tackle for 10 yards, but fumbled and Routt recovered at the Doggie seven. Jones gave the Bulldogs a little running room an he plucked a Routt pitchout off the ground on the second play and sped 14 yards to the Brady 19. On the next play Routt rambled 13 yards on a keeper, but he fumbled and Daniel Wuest, a Fredericksburg stand out recovered on the Brady 42. A strong Brady defense and a five yard penalty hurt the Hillies and QB Glen Grona’s 1 yard run on fourth down was two yards short of the first down marker. but again the Bulldogs had poor field position at their own . Three running plays netted absolutely zero and Dean Ellison's punt was blocked and recovered in the end zone for an apparent TD. However, the officials detected an offsider and Ellison, who did a great job getting the ball off all night, got another try. So once again the Bulldogs had their backs to the wall. But on third down Jason Jacoby dropped Grona for a four yard loss then Bobby Herbert dumped Grona for an eight yard loss on fourth down. The Bulldogs couldn't move and Ellison gave the Brady team a little breathing room. Three plays later, early in the second period, Jones lunged for a Grona pass, tipped it in the air and grabbed it while lying flat on his back, giving Brady their best field position of the might at the Brady 47. The Fredericksburg defense swarmed the Brady ball car riers and four plays later the Billies had the ball back. It was short-lived and Grona fumbled a few minutes later and Tim Lambes recovered at the Brady 43. Following an exchange of punts, Fredericksburg began a last ditch match before the first half ended. With Grona completing three straight passes, the Billies advanced to the Brady 17, but with 15 seconds left Grona fumbled again and Jacoby pounced on it at the Brady 20 as the half expired. Brady Coach Paul Jette must have had some fiery words for the Bulldogs at intermission because the Doggies came out smoking in the third quarter. On the first play from scrimmage Jones accepted a pitchout from Routt and darted 33 yards before being pushed out of bounds. After reaching the Fredericksburg 31, the drive soured and Routt's pass from the 36 fell incomplete. The Doggies held and got it right back, but three plays later John Cross couldn't control a Routt pitch and Tony Roth recovered at the Brady 40. The Brady defense again stiffened and Wuest punted to the Brady 15. From that spot the Bulldogs began their first scoring campaign. BRADY *es 6 @ 00M 014 FREDBURG. 0006—6 BRADY FRESHMAN TEAM.
