by Debbe Nelson raid star writer .A crowd of more than 40,000 stood and cheered Sunday as the White Sox hoisted the American League West championship banner atop Comiskey Park. They cheered for the flag as it flapped in the brisk westerly wind, for the team watching the event from the third base line — and for themselves. They had waited a long time for a winner. And now they were taking full advantage. “We bought $60 or $70 of souvenirs,” said David Fireooed of Fort Wayne, Ind. “Who knows when they might win again? I may die before then.” The Sox clinched their division title Saturday night with an exciting 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Mariners. They frosted that with a 6-0 win Sun day, fueling predictions that the team will skip its way to the World Series. THE SOX first must beat the winner of the Eastern division — probably the Baltimore Orioles — for the American League pennant. They play a five game series beginning Oct. 5. The Sox last made the World Series in 1959. They lost then to the Los Ange les Dodgers and have not earned a first place title since. “They didn't win the World Series in '59, but they're going to do it in ’83,” said Richard Coughlin, 37, of Chicago. “Last night after the game, I took some grass from center field and stuffed it in my son's pocket. I said, “Save that grass. That's history in the making. That's World Series grass.’ Coughlin attended two of those World Series games. The feeling in the stands and in the city is the same now as it was in 1959, he said “PEOPLE ARE hanging out their windows shouting, giving the high five sign. It’s catching,” he said. “Every body's happy.” ‘It's a happy town,” agreed Burton Sweet, 57, of Richton Park. Also a longtime fan, he watched Sunday’s game from the bleachers. “It's the greatest thing ever to hap pen to Chicago in my lifetime,” he said, noting the winning spirit spills ‘out of the park and bestows a universal blessing on the Chicago area.”
