Du Quoin's native sons and daughters have made names for themselves in many fields. Some of them hold high positions in unusual occupations. These are but a few: Thomas S. Horn—retired from U. S. diplomatic service ‘with rank of consul and secretary of legation. Born in Du Quoin June 24, 1894, son of Thomas and Ros alie Zrotz Horn. Entered U. S. Foreign Service in 1922 as career officers, retired in 1947. Step-son of Mrs. Vina Howells Horn and nephew of Miss Lottie Horn and Mrs. W. W. Parks of Du Quoin. Marlin Hurt—Famous “Beulah” of radio fame. Third son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Hurt. First radio recognition as part of “Tom, Dick and Harry trio. Skyrock eted to national favor on “Fibber McGee and Molly” show, then secured program of his own. Died suddenly of heart attack on March 21, 1946. Richard an Raymond Grills— sons of Charley and Emma Yeh ling Grills, Dick has been con nected with Walt Disney Stud ios in Hollywood, California, for 16 years. He handles the multi plane cameras which combines cartoons with live action in pre paring cartoon moving pictures. Young brother Raymond, is tech nical manager for acetate and “Orion” acylic fiber with E. J. Dupont de Nemours . and Co Inc.,, With offices at Wilming ton, Delaware. He has been with DuPont since 1940. Stanley Kimmel—born in Du Quoin in 1895, son of Mr. ad Mrs. Dan Kimmel, Author of “The Mad Booths of Maryland,” im portant contribution to Lincoln literature. Has written plays and poems and is continuing writing career in Washington, D. C. Ted Roy—son of Mrs. Pearl Roy of Du Quoin, has played with top name bands in the east. Played trumpet in early days and later the piano. Association with George Wettlings and “Pee Wee” Russell’s band in Jack Dempsey’s restaurant on Broadway in New York City. Julia Henderson—born in Du Quoin August 15, 1915, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Henderson. Holds doctor's degree in political science and is “Director of United Nations Department of Social Welfare’—the highest position held by any woman in the UN or ganization. Lucius Humphrey—born in Du Quoin, son of John Franklin and Belle Gill Humphrey and brother of Mrs. Howard Kimmel. Promin ent New York psychologist, was close friend of Thomas A. Edison and taught music to Edison’s children. Gilbert Nettleton — vice-presi dent of Pennsylvania railroad. Resides in Washington, D. C., with wife, former Arvilla Bar heidt. Was formerly secretary to Congressman Martin B. Madden.
