‘Saucer” mysterynNE mystery of what many people v who saw it declared was a “flying saucer” has been solved. At Stow-port. on the north west coast of Tasmania, a remarkable object appeared in the sky from across Bass Strait gyrating and diving at high speed until it finally disappeared in me direction-of Burnie. Witnesses described it as spinning slowly, then on rising to an altitude of 800ft it opened out in. parachute fashion. It was the size of a large aeroplane. It has since been discovered that the mvsterious object was in reality a huge flock of starlings travelling aiong the coast after a day of searching for food on farms. Observers who were able to obtain a view when the birds were overhead (the first reDorts had come from people who saw them in. the distance against a grey background of low clouds) say that there must have been thousands flying wingtip to wingtip, forming what seemed to be a solid mass. After zooming about the sky in this fashion, birds at the top of the flight fanned out, while those below packed into a tight mass which formed a great mushroom in the sky. Then they massed in the shape of a giant top, and went wheeling straight up in the air. It was an amazing and at the same time eerie sight. The starling, like several other introduced birds, has increased rapidly in Tasmania, and its habit of getting in beneath corrugated-iron roofs to make a nesting place gives householders a great deal of worry, especially as the amount of grass and straw the birds gather creates potential fire-hazards. In Tasmanian churches the commotion made by starlings which have made their abode above the ceilings is frequently distracting. Orchardists, too, place the starling high up on the list of fruit destructionists. — Derwent (Tac.).★ ★ ★ u ?
