While the committee were deliberating Mrs. S, W. Whitney was granted ten minutes to address the convention on the subject of political equality.— S he^ spoke of Bending petitions with over 2,000 names to the legislature asking for equal suffrage. She expressed the opinion that no other petition with that many names could have been presented without securing the vote of our representative. The delegates appreciated the joke, as Mr.Hauger, who was presiding, was the representative to whom Mrs. Whitney alluded. In closing her remarks Mrs. Whitney asked a lew minutes time for Mias Hinman, who presented the following resolution and asked its adoption.Jiesolved, That we, the republicans of Blackhawk county, in convention assembled, do hereby endorse tho submission by our next legislature of an amendment to striking out the word “male” from the constitution of Iowa.D. W. Crouse, of Waterloo, moved that the resolution be adopted as the sense of the convention. The motion was seconded by H. L. Hazel. Dr. Newman of this city opposed the adoption of theresolution without consideration and mature deliberation. Mr. Hemenway also opposed the adoption of the resolution at this time, although he announced that he was in favor oj the position taken in the resolution.
