Butterfly is Carey’s first album since her breakup with her record exeohubby, Sony president tbmmy Mottola, The title track sees her dealing with the split, which, according to the song, is amicable rather than acrimonious.The song equates a lover to a butterfly that must spread its wings and can’t be kept under glass: “If you should return to me/We truly were meant to be.” After that statement, Carey has little else to say on this 57-minute disc.Which isn’t to say she doesn’t say it beautifully: production, aided by such fiavour-of-the-months as hipbopper Sean “Puffy” Combs, is impeccable. Carey’s vocal range remains like an Olympic gymnast, soaring high in complex moves, but nevertheless landing gracefully.Standout tracks almost guaranteed to be hits include the Puffy-produeed hip-hop/RB single Honey and a cover of Prince’s The Beautiful Ones with Pru Hill doing the companion vocal,Lyrically, however, the material is weak, relying heavily on the genre’s trademark “oh baby, baby” stylings, Stylistically, there’s nothing new here. But with a voice like that, who really cares? Fans won’t be disappointed.
