nstl-*eddeNSEA SERPENT STORY ISWEST COAST SENSATIONFisherman is Attacked by Ma ing Shark—Is Scared JustLittle Bitisist-rONUDERABLE excitement was recently caused by the circulation of the report that a sea serpent had attacked and bitten a fisherman offL-ni-batliKeppell Island at the entrance to Hawk’s Bay, says The Western Star. Some of the stories put the length of the sea monster at 80 feet, and d some state that had a huge shovel- j J like head on a snake’s neck. The truth is that a savage attack was made by what was probably a man-eating shark on a fisherman named Kid Perry when he was rowing a small dory from Port Saunders toSpirity Cove.Noticing an unusually large fish swimming around the dory he struck at it with one of his paddles. It then made direct for the dory and put his head onto the gunwale and tore off part of Perry’s guernsey at the waist. Somewhat scared by the appearance of the monster the man j laid down at the bottom of the dory. The shark made several other attempts to get at him and in one ] jj| of these bit him rather severely in•;lt; i the arm.iT | The occupants of a motor boat, [J. I seeing that something Unusual was \ i happening in the dory, rushed up to | render assistance. The shark made a dash at the motor boat, but the swirl of the propellor scared it off. The injured fisherman was taken into Spirity Cove, where he was cor\j gratulated on his lucky escape, and the fishermen of the bay are hoping j | they may have a chance of putting an end to the escapades of the ferocious monster.4 A somewhat more sensational re-|port comes from further north. It is to the effect that a monster attacked a man and his son with fatal results to the latter. It is to be hoped that the true facts are not soirisyhyh■iiti1!i1serious.
