Findlay High's junior varsity football squad will be hoping to mold a winner out of a talented defense and a pinch of offense when the 1976 season gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Trojans travel to Toledo Whitmer. ‘Right now our defense is totally ahead of the offense plus I think it's a little stronger than any we’ve had in the past couple of years,” Coach Terry Heater said. “The size isn’t there but the kids are reacting better, getting to the ball and the technique is pretty good. Maybe we can squeeze the offense enough and win some ball games,” he said. Walter Schramm, 6-1, 185, and Dan Eaton, 5-9, 175, are the starting defensive tackles while Doug Howard, 5-8, 160, and Rick Burke, 5-7, 165, will get the call at ends. Outside linebackers are Kevin MacDonald, 5-9, 155, and Steve Linhart, 5- 10, 170, and inside linebackers Scott Smith, 5-7, 160, and Bruce Heater, 5-8, 160. Todd Gillan, 5-7, 160, and Darryl Preston, 5-8, 155, will man the halfback posts and Tim Yoder, 5-7, 145, is the Starting safety. ‘In comparison to past years we’re not as big and not as well off in the skilled areas,” Heater said. ‘“‘We are without substitute backs that we can count on and our linemen are not big. “We're going to have to be full of a lot of fire and hustle to overcome the things we lack physically,”’ he said. The offensive unit appears to be led by tailback Todd Van Gunten, 5-10, 190, whom Heater describes as a real good one if we can get the blocking for him. Jett Slough, 5-8, 140, will handle the quarterback chores with Jess Essinger, 6- 0, 185, at tailback and Randy Smaltz, 5-8, 160, at slotback . Neil Teatforth, 5-10, 160, is the starting center; Tim Tussing, 5- 10,165, and Joe Pina, 5-6, 160, the guards;and Bill Coburn, 6-1, 190, and Rick Larson, 6-0, 175, the tackles. Mark Webber, 5-10, 155, will play tight end; and Craig Gephart, 5-7, 145, split end.
