New apparel really gemsNEW YOHK (AP) — “If you’ve got a pair of pliers and Imagination, you can do an aw. ful lot, said an assistant to jewelry designer Bill Smith as she held up a pair of pants made of gold coins.The pants, along with a matching vest, were one of a number of items at a show Tuesday night of Smith's latest jewelry.The 34.year.old designer, one of the first Negroes in the busu ness, creates dresses, suits, capes, pants, halters and hats of rhinestones, pearls, black beads and metal chains.Smith said his designs are jewelry as clothing. They are strong enough so they can be clothing in themselves.A former dancer who worked in a jewelry factory when he first came to New York and fi. nally decided he preferred jew. elry, he said his designs canbe worn over clothing or insteadof clothing.The models Tuesday draped the jewels over simple jersey dresses by Jon iiaggins, over body stockings and over bare skin.
