We have just gotten back from the trenches.Our first night in the trenches we were ordered to make ready for an attack and we were ready to go over at 9.30 p m. Well there werfe four of us band fellows who were to follow tip the infantry and we came in the trenches about an hour before the attack.As I sat there in the dugout I got to thinking of home because you see this was my first time in going over the top.Well at 9:05 p. m. a solitary shot from a cannon of our artillery started the bombardment on the Germans. Before the bombardment it was dark as pitch and when we got started it was as light as day. This lasted until 9:27 then our barrage started. We were stationed right under the barrage.When we got to the German trenches that is the first line, we fqund some dead and when we Started for the second line two marline guns opened fire on us. You ought to haveseen those D- Germans. Theywere chained to their guns and either had to kill us or get killed. They got the latter.I must omit the details but it is sufficient to say that when we got back we were congratulated by our Colonel.
